6. Damp proofing below ground level
Build the first courses below ground level with normal, solid bricks. In order to prevent rising damp, it is best to place a damp-proof foil between the courses below ground level and the course above it. First apply some mortar on the course below ground level. Apply the foil, then some more mortar and then position the first course of bricks above ground level. Because the damp-proof course is covered in mortar on both sides, it is advisable to have this joint slightly thicker. The thicker joint is usually not visible. If you do decide to use a 4 mm joint here as well for aesthetic reasons, it is recommended to glue the foil on with polymers.
