Is a specially adapted masonry mortar needed?
Indeed. The mortar needs to guarantee a good adhesion. We therefore advise the use of prefabricated mortars. Various mortar manufacturers have developed special mortars for this type of brickwork. The bricklayer can check the adhesion on site by using the cross-test or 1 minute test.
Is there a risk of water penetration through the open lap joints?
No, and incidentally the same is true of glued facades. Research has shown that 4mm open joints do not make it possible for rain to penetrate. Furthermore, the facing brick will absorb the rainwater because of its porous structure and will dry out more quickly because of the open structure of a ZERO wall. In other words, the water buffering action of the joint-free facade is comparable with that of the facade with joints.
Is the risk of insects such as bees and wasps getting in the cavity through the open lap joints and nesting there greater with ZERO?
On the contrary, the open lap points are only mm wide, which appears to be too small for these insects.
Do you need more bricks per m²?
Yes, in joint-free brickwork, the facing brick plays a more prominent part. The joints are made smaller and the linear dimensions of a brick are adjusted to suit. Around 90 bricks per m² are needed.
How high is the mortar consumption?
Consumption is approximately 30kg/m², obviously depending on the operator.
Is it best to use a coloured mortar?
This is a question of aesthetics and thus a matter of personal taste. If done correctly much less mortar is visible with ZERO brickwork than with traditional brickwork but still an unsuitable mortar colour can be a blemish. For a uniform effect you can choose for a matching coloured mortar, e.g. red mortar for a red facing brick. Or you could work with dark mortar (anthracite-dark grey) that reinforces the shadow effect of the joint. Various mortar manufacturers offer a range of coloured mortars, developed especially for joint-free brickwork. For more information we refer to the construction company.
How many colours is the ZERO format available in?
ZERO will be available as standard in a number of colours (see page "colours"). However, depending on the size of the project, other colours in the Vandersanden range – excluding the Nostalgie range – can be provided in ZERO. This does, however, always require advance consultation.
